Alvin Jewett Johnson was born in Wallingford, Vermont in 1827. He received only a basic public education, but he went on to become a school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia and then ultimately to New York City in 1857. In New York, Johnson worked as a book canvasser for the map publisher J.H. Colton and eventually went on to become a successful map publisher himself.
