"Spindletop wrought great changes in the world. It improved man's lot on this earth. I am writing my version of the historical event in the hope that this booklet may do good also. Of all the men who had a part in the drilling of Spindletop, I alone am left. It must be that the Lord has spared me for some purpose, and the writing of this booklet may be it. My two brothers who were with me at Spindletop died of cancer. My two daughters are afflicted with muscular dystrophy. The revenue from this booklet will go into research that may enable mankind to conquer those diseases." - Curtis G. Hamill

Background on Creator

Curtis G. Hamill was a pioneering American oil driller best known for his key role in the 1901 Spindletop well, the historic Texas discovery that marked the beginning of the modern petroleum industry. Born in the late 19th century, Hamill, along with his brother Al Hamill, formed part of the Hamill Brothers Contracting Company, a family business renowned for drilling expertise in Texas. The Hamill brothers were instrumental in introducing and perfecting the use of drilling mud to successfully penetrate oil sands, a practice that became revolutionary for rotary drilling worldwide.

At Spindletop, Curtis Hamill was on the derrick platform when the legendary gusher erupted, propelling oil over 100 feet in the air and producing up to 100,000 barrels a day—more than the previous year’s entire Texas oil output. This event not only transformed Beaumont, Texas but also spurred the rapid expansion of the oil industry, leading to the birth of major companies like Texaco and Gulf Oil. Hamill’s innovations and eyewitness involvement made him a celebrated figure and, until his death at age 100, he was the last surviving participant of the original Spindletop discovery. His legacy is closely tied to the technical and economic foundations of the U.S. petroleum industry.
