Arthur Edward Stilwell bought the townsite for Port Arthur from the William Perry Herring McFaddin's Beaumont Pasture Company, and it was on land leased from the McFaddins that Anthony F. Lucas drilled the Lucas Gusher, the discovery well of the Spindletop oilfield. His associates Kyle and Wiess who help form a number of companies with McFaddin were present for this photograph.
